NGLCC Releases Historic "America’s LGBT Economy" Report

NGLCC Releases Historic
 “America’s LGBT Economy” Report,
Suggests LGBT Businesses Add
$1.7 Trillion to US Economy and
Create Tens of Thousands of Jobs Nationwide

National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce snapshot of
Certified LGBT Business Enterprises® (LGBTBEs) explores powerful economic contributions to America across all business sectors
The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), the business voice of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, has released the first-ever snapshot demonstrating the economic and social impact of America’s LGBT business owners and entrepreneurs. The America’s LGBT Economy report explores the revenues, types, sizes and geography of LGBT-owned businesses currently certified by NGLCC, as well as the number of jobs they create and the personal narratives of successful LGBT business owners who reflect the very best about America’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.

NGLCC’s “America’s LGBT Economy” report can be viewed and downloaded at www.nglcc.org/report

Bob Witeck of certified LGBTBE Witeck Communications helped prepare this landmark report.  Witeck’s works has helped give voice to the LGBT community and our annual spending power. Now he has helped NGLCC produce the first look at our economic impact as a business community.

“The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be able to evidence, through this report, what we’ve observed since our founding fifteen years ago — that America’s LGBT business owners are driving our economy upward and deserve every opportunity to keep creating jobs and innovating our industries. The estimated 1.4 million LGBT business owners NGLCC advocates for have truly earned a place at the equality table,” said NGLCC Co-Founder & President Justin Nelson. “If you are an LGBT business owner and not yet certified, you’re leaving opportunities on the table to help your business and our economy grow. For the LGBT community, this also means we are missing out on more accurate data, role models, job creator, and future success stories that prove ‘If you can buy it, a Certified LGBTBE can supply it.'”

“These numbers tell the real story,” said Bob Witeck, President of Witeck Communications, a certified LGBTBE that served as the analyst for this report. “While our community’s $917 billion spending power highlights our market clout, the jobs, tax revenues and profits we create as employers and entrepreneurs define our full economic value to America. We are just beginning to scratch the surface of our potential.”

“At NGLCC, we have nearly 200 corporate and government partners that understand not only the value of the LGBT dollar, but the economic imperative of inclusivity and LGBT visibility in their supply chains and marketplace. This groundbreaking report proves our NGLCC philosophy that economic visibility, just like social visibility, is essential in building a diverse and inclusive society,” said NGLCC Co-Founder & CEO Chance Mitchell.

Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights Applauds Marriage Equality Decision

WASHINGTON – Wade Henderson, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement in response to today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which finally recognized marriage equality for gay and lesbian Americans as a constitutional right. The Leadership Conference submitted an amicus brief in this case in favor of marriage equality:

“This is a transformative day in American history. Today is the day that our nation’s highest court acknowledged the full dignity of LGBT Americans to love and build a family as equals in our society.

While today’s ruling ushers in a new era of acceptance and family security for LGBT Americans, it also highlights the blunt denial of basic rights – in access to employment, housing, public accommodations, education, and credit—that are still being denied in too many states across the nation.

Just as the Supreme Court case of Loving v. Virginia, which held that state laws prohibiting interracial marriage were unconstitutional, was a forerunner to marriage equality for LGBT people, our nation must also adopt a comprehensive nationwide law to give LGBT Americans the same protections that are already established for people of color, women, religious minorities, and people with disabilities.

Civil rights can only be measured by a single yardstick and our nation can no longer settle for piecemeal solutions to the second-class citizenship of LGBT Americans.”

Wade Henderson is president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the rights of all persons in the United States. The Leadership Conference works toward an America as good as its ideals. For more information on The Leadership Conference and its 200-plus member organizations, visit www.civilrights.org.

PHOTOGRAPHER, SANDRA GREENBERG, EVERY FRIDAY IN LAHAINA FROM 4:30-7:30 PM.

A COLLECTION OF HER PHOTOGRAPHS

FROM AROUND THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS ON DISPLAY.

About The Artist

sandra“I was fortunate to grow up in New York City and have access to some amazing schools.  I attended the high school of Art and Design in Manhattan and then went on to attend Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art where I majored in painting and photography.   After Cooper Union I went to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where I received my PD in Creative Development and Art Therapy.  I later pursued educational degrees in Special Education and Supervision where I could use my license in Art Therapy and teaching, and actually support myself. My father was stationed in Schoffield barracks during World War II and filled my head with stories of Hawaii.  My father had a hula girl tattooed on his arm, which was my version of what a princess would be like.  I think part of me always knew that someday I’d be here. I am so grateful to be doing what I love, around people I love, in the place that I love. What can make you feel more alive than whales, turtles, rainbows and sunsets? That is what I want my pictures to show.”

Ironman World Championship
For over 35 years the IRONMAN World Championship has brought the world’s best athletes together in competition. The inaugural “Hawaiian IRON MAN Triathlon” was conceptualized in 1977 as a way to challenge athletes who had seen success at endurance swim, running and biathlon events. Honolulu-based Navy couple Judy and John Collins proposed combining the three toughest endurance races in Hawai’i—the 2.4-mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, 112 miles of the Around-O’ahu Bike Race and the 26.2-mile Honolulu Marathon—into one event.

On February 18, 1978, 15 people came to Waikiki to take on the IRONMAN challenge. Prior to racing, each received three sheets of paper with a few rules and a course description. The last page read: “Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag for the rest of your life!”

In 1981, the race moved from the tranquil shores of Waikiki to the barren lava fields of Kona on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Along the Kona Coast, black lava rock dominates the panorama, and athletes battle the “ho’omumuku” crosswinds of 45 mph, 95 degree temperatures and a scorching sun.

The IRONMAN World Championship centers on the dedication and courage exhibited by participants who demonstrate the IRONMAN mantra that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.® On October 11th, over 2,000 athletes will embark on a 140.6-mile journey that presents the ultimate test of body, mind and spirit to earn the title of IRONMAN.
